Fans simply love on-screen romances. Even during their ups and downs, we love watching them get back together or even reconciling to divorce but still being friends; and we always recall those scenes of devotion, affection, and love. So how annoying is it to find out that many a couple from our favorite flicks were actually at each other’s throats?! Well, guess that’s life. Here are 9 such couples who were anything but cozy while filming.
Rachel McAdams & Ryan Gosling – The Notebook (2004)
Gosling’s and McAdams’ off-screen arguments reached a point where Gosling actually refused to work with her. Director Nicholas Cassavetes told VH1 that the star actually asked him in front of 150 people in the scene, “Would you take her out of here and bring in another actress to read off camera with me?” That’s pretty bad and certainly not in tune with the romance we saw in the film. Or was it? After all of their bickering during the entire production and seeming so at odds with each other, the two finally did reconcile and date for three years!
Jennifer Grey & Patrick Swayze – Dirty Dancing (1987)
Patrick Swayze and Jennifer Grey were headed for disaster after their friction on the set of Red Dawn . And sure enough, while filming Dirty Dancing , the two were far from comfy with each other. Highly emotional and often crying at the slightest criticism, Grey made filming a nightmare for Swayze who complained that the actress would prolong many a shoot due to her inane silliness at times. Seems hard to believe given the magic this pair made on screen. They did end up friends, though far from lovers.
Dustin Hoffman & Meryl Streep – Kramer vs. Kramer (1979)
The Hollywood Reporter stated that Streep was shocked to find out while promoting the film that Hoffman was angry at her, and given the nature of the film it could have been tough to know he was truly angry at her, in real life that is. But why? Streep herself doubted the allegations, but Hoffman stepped in to confirm the rumors, telling the magazine, “I’m sure I was acting out on her throughout the movie. Stuff that I was feeling toward the wife that I was divorcing in real life.”
Angelina Jolie & Johnny Depp – The Tourist (2010)
Sources for In Touch had many an interesting fact regarding the mud-slinging between these two. Jolie claimed Depp was out-of-shape, constantly late, and scruffy. Depp complained that Jolie was a prima donna, a control freak and full of herself. Jolie was incredulous that Depp never cut his hair nor kept in shape; Depp was boggled at the time she spent getting prepped. For a film where producers were hoping for blockbuster chemistry between the two stars, their off-camera dislikes for each other couldn’t have helped.
Teri Hatcher & Pierce Brosnan – Tomorrow Never Dies (1998)
Teri was barely in this flick, but the scenes she and Brosnan had together betrayed an emotional attachment for Bond rarely seen if at all for the spy. Off set, however, Brosnan carried no sentiments for the actress. In fact, he was darned annoyed at her most times for being late. “She was always keeping me waiting for hours. I must admit I let slip a few words which weren’t very nice,” the 007 actor stated. The situation wasn’t nice at all, as it was later revealed Teri was pregnant and suffering from morning sickness.
Reese Witherspoon & Vince Vaughn – Four Christmases (2008)
These two made the perfect couple in this hilarious holiday hit about, well, relationships. Yet, it turns out that Reese and Vaughn were anything but close when the cameras stopped rolling. Sources say the two were constantly clashing over style. Vaughn preferred his relaxed and impromptu method, while Reese always insisted on being more prepared and rehearsed for each scene. At least for the moments of tension in the plot, the two must have filmed those scenes easily!
Apparently these two actors were not prepared for some of the demands the subject matter of this story put on them. For Johnson’s character, this could have worked well; but with Jamie also being very uncomfortable with some material and scenes, that must have created some tough issues indeed. Both are young actors and new to the field; but given their supposed lack of chemistry and ability to pull this film off the way they did, you’d say they were both seasoned pros.
Fans hate hearing about this feud, but indeed Mulder and Scully were extremely hostile to each other on set, with Anderson once stating that “familiarity breeds contempt.” Yet, it was more than just getting sick of each other that got between these two. Duchovny was paid twice as much as Anderson, plus she was always made to walk behind him in scenes. These facts stood, despite having equal billing and dialogue, because Anderson was a woman. Wow. Surprised they were able to pull off any chemistry at all.
All was great between these two love birds when they first met on set and married a year later. Unfortunately, things went south, and they divorced five months after that with Bush alleging that Murray had cheated on her. Of course, the problem was that the two had to continue filming together for another three years, which must have been excruciating. Disliking someone you work with is bad enough, but how much worse when you were married to them?! Looking at Bush’s face above, she certainly looks less than thrilled.
